There are two methods to flash an iphone
1. Updating
2. Restoring
Updating is used to update current operating system into a new updated official version without losing any data even pass code lock !, While Restoring is used to re install a current OS , by restoring all data will be lost and also the iphone will feel as a new iphone ..
If a customer want to update his phone then "Updating" process is to be done
if the customer has a complaint like restart, logo only, hang or he has forgotten his pass code , then instead of updating we have to do restoring.
Updating and restoring can be done in two different ways
1. Online
2. Manual
In online mode the process is truly via internet , that is the flashing occurs by downloading the firmware from apple server.
In manual mode we can flash the handset with the pre-downloaded firmware, Even though it is manual mode internet connection is needed, because while flashing an authentication is to be done with the Apple server
ios devices are flashed (update/restore) by itunes (official PC suit of Apple) , a third party tool named 3u tool is also available.

If you have to update/restore a handset online , Do as follows:
1. Connect the handset to PC
2. Open itunes, some times it will open automatically
3. Click on "Update"/"Restore"
4. Wait until the process is completed
If you have to flash manually by a downloaded firmware, Do as follows:
1. Connect handset to PC
2. Open itunes
3. Press and hold SHIFT key on keyboard simultaneously click on Update/Restore
4. Select the firmware from the PC (see firmware identification above ..)
5. Wait until the process is completed

Apple has officially given a lock to their devices which do not allow the used to install 3rd party aps in their devices. breaking of this lock is named as jailbreaking
